The 1952 Fiji Tour to Australia: A Legendary Journey On their first tour to Australia, the Fijian team played 10 matches, including two unforgettable tests against the Wallabies at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
First Test (July 26, 1952): A hard-fought 15-9 loss that showcased Fiji’s determination and potential. Second Test (August 9, 1952): A dramatic 17-15 victory, concluding the tour with an unexpected triumph and cementing Fiji’s place in rugby history. Josefa Levula: Fiji’s First Rugby Star At just 21 years old, winger Joe Levula became a rising legend. Known for his blistering speed (Fiji’s 220m champion) and on-field prowess, he scored 7 tries in 6 matches before the first test. His performance during the tour earned him recognition as one of the Top Five Players of the Year in New Zealand’s Rugby Almanack in 1952.
Levula later switched to rugby league in England, joining the Rochdale Hornets and Bradford Northern, and was inducted into the Fiji Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.
